Where to Wander This Fall in Stafford

Oct 7, 2026

As temperatures cool down and the days grow shorter, fall is one of the best times to get outside and explore Stafford County. Our parks offer plenty of ways to enjoy the autumn scenery. Hike beneath changing leaves, kayak along quiet creeks, keep an eye out for wildlife or find a spot along the river to take in the fall colors.

Peak fall foliage in Stafford is expected towards the end of October into the first week of November; however, be sure to check current conditions on the Virginia Fall Foliage Map as you plan your trip. To help you get the most out of your visit, here are a few top local spots where you can take in the autumn colors alongside plenty of outdoor activities.

Government Island

Once a quarry that supplied sandstone for the U.S. Capitol, Government Island is now a peaceful spot for a fall walk. Follow the easy two-mile loop through the woods and across wooden boardwalks that wind over the tidal marsh, with plenty of changing leaves along the way. Keep an eye out for blue herons, turtles and deer, and don’t miss the views of autumn colors reflecting off the water.

Widewater State Park

Tucked between Aquia Creek and the Potomac River, Widewater State Park is a great place to catch fall colors from a different point of view. Rent a kayak or canoe, or bring your own, and paddle along the shoreline as the trees turn shades of yellow and orange. Prefer to stay on dry land? Take a walk along the Holly Marsh Trail with crunchy leaves underfoot, or pack a lunch and settle in for a crisp fall picnic by the river.

Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve

Surrounded by tidal marshes and wooded landscapes, Crow’s Nest is a peaceful place to escape the crowds and take in the colors of fall. More than eight miles of unpaved trails wind through red oaks and poplars that turn shades of red and gold, giving you plenty to see along the way. For a change of scenery, launch a kayak from the Brooke Road access point and trade the trail for a peaceful paddle along the tidal creek.

Curtis Memorial Park

Curtis Memorial Park combines classic fall outdoor fun with active recreation. The park’s 18-hole disc golf course winds through wooded terrain, letting you play a round under a canopy of falling leaves. You can also fish from the public dock on Lake Curtis, where the surrounding autumn trees reflect off the water, or head out on several miles of wooded trails for a fall hike or bike ride around the lake.

Duff McDuff Green Memorial Park

Tucked right along the Rappahannock River, Duff McDuff Green Memorial Park gives you a great mix of wide open fields and cozy wooded trails. The tree-lined paths are great for spotting the leaves changing color up close. If you have a furry friend, bring them along! With three separate dog parks on site, your pup can get in on the fall fun, too.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio

Part historic estate, part art destination and part outdoor escape, Gari Melchers Home and Studio has plenty to explore on a fall afternoon. Wander the colorful grounds before following the wooded trails down toward the Rappahannock River, with changing leaves and views of the water along the way. Between the historic home, riverside scenery and peaceful trails, it makes for a fall outing with a little bit of everything.

Chatham Manor

Sitting high above the Rappahannock River, Chatham Manor is a beautiful spot to take in the colors of fall. Wander through the historic grounds and 1920s walled gardens, spend some time exploring the site’s Civil War history, then stop to take in the view across the river, where downtown Fredericksburg peeks through the changing trees.

Stafford Civil War Park

Combining rich history with big seasonal views, this 41-acre park was once a 1862 Union Army winter encampment. Today, peaceful trails wind past remarkably preserved earthworks and historic battery sites. Thanks to the park’s elevated setting, you’ll be treated to sweeping, high-elevation vistas over canopy tops making it a quiet, scenic spot where history meets peak fall foliage.

Quick Tips for Your Visit

  • Time It Right: Fall colors in the Stafford area typically put on their best show in mid-to-late October, but Mother Nature doesn’t always stick to the schedule. Temperature and rainfall can shift the timing each year, so check Virginia’s fall foliage reports as your visit gets closer.

  • Best Light: Early morning and late afternoon offer the best natural light for outdoor photos along the trails and water.

  • What to Pack: Sturdy shoes are recommended for unpaved trails at Crow’s Nest and Curtis Park. If you plan to be near the river, bring an extra layer to stay warm against the cool water breezes.

  • Look Beyond the Leaves: Keep an eye out for deer, turtles, blue herons and other wildlife while you explore. Fall colors might be the main event, but they aren’t the only thing worth spotting.
