History

Stafford has been a crossroads for many important events and travelers in history, dating back to dinosaurs, Native Americans, and 17th century European settlers.  Click here to see a brief timeline of Stafford’s history, and a more detailed overview of its development.

Dozens of historic buildings and sites dot the county.  One of the most concentrated areas is in the Historic Port of Falmouth – a National Historic District. This sister city of Fredericksburg, established in 1728, is survived by approximately 24 original 18th century historic buildings, many of which are private residences. Other historic sites are found around the county. Click on one of the topics below to explore the many layers of Stafford's past.
