  • Steamships, Slaves, Railroads, and Armies: Aquia Landing

    Jul 25, 2014 Image

After a year’s hiatus, the National Park Service is pleased to announce the 2014 schedule for its popular Friday evening “History at Sunset” programs. Now in its twelfth year, the series explores lesser known aspects of the Civil War in the Fredericksburg area. All programs begin at 7 p.m. and are free.

Steamships, Slaves, Railroads, and Armies: Aquia Landing is about the diverse and significant history of Aquia Landing. During the civil war, thousands of slaves moved northward by foot, wagon, and rail, most of them boarding steamboats at Aquia Landing, bound for Alexandria and Washington, D.C. It is believed to be the largest exodus of slaves emancipating themselves.
