Opportunity:
The Courthouse Area encompasses the Stafford Courthouse, County Government buildings, a brand new hospital (Stafford Hospital Center, opened Feb. 2009), a new public safety building (opened Feb. 2008), and an eclectic mix of offices, shops, and homes. The Stafford Medical Center brings additional employees and visitors to the area. A proposed new interchange planned at Exit 140 of I-95 will make access easier to this concentration of activity.
Potential:
The Courthouse area includes the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway (US Route 1) and Courthouse Road (Rte. 630). Free-standing retail and office buildings generally supporting government activities have evolved here. Courthouse Road, aside from providing primary access to the County Administration Building, has traditionally simply connected Jefferson Davis Highway to I-95. The new projects and proposed interchange bring the potential for reinvestment.
Vision:
The rendering shown above suggests a potential vision for the Courthouse Area that marks the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and Courthouse Road through a "town square" approach. Each corner of the intersection provides space for a different community use. The green space in front of the historic courthouse provides community open space. Mixed-use developments could be designed and built to include multiple accesses by a variety of methods.

- 06/2007: A public forum was held to discuss the vision for the Courthouse Area and recieve public comment.
Redevelopments Underway:
- Stafford Hospital Center: Opened February of 2009. A full service, acute care facility is now accepting patients.
- Public Safety Building: Opened February of 2008. This new County building accommodates Stafford's growing emergency services needs. The building houses Fire & EMS offices, the Sheriff's Department and central dispatch.
